On January 8, 2011, Jared Lee Loughner shot U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and a number of other people who were present at a public appearance by Giffords in Tucson, Arizona. U.S. Judge John Roll and five others were killed. Many others were severely wounded, including Giffords. The FBI investigated the attack under a number of statutes. This release consists of FBI files concerning the early stages of that investigation.

Abbie Hoffman
Abbot Howard "Abbie" Hoffman (1936-1989) was a political and social activist, especially in the 1960s. The FBI investigated Hoffman under anti-riot laws and as a domestic security threat. The files in this release range from 1968 to 1973 and cover Hoffman’s role as a leader in the Yippie Party (Youth International Party), his role in anti-war protests at the 1968 Democrat National Convention in Chicago, and his subsequent trials as one of the “Chicago Eight” conspiracists.
Abe Fortas
Abe Fortas (1910-1982) was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1965 to 1969. This release consists of several types of investigations between 1964 and 1975, including a special inquiry into Fortas’ suitability for appointment to the Supreme Court, allegations that Fortas obstructed justice in a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation, and threats of violence against him.
